Africa Tribal Mask

$375.00

Painstakingly carved and finished West African mask of unknown. authorship or exact age. Masks were/are used in many parts of Africa and differentiate between tribes. Used mostly in festivals and celebrations, masks and depict a wide variety of Gods to ward off evil and bring good fortune. Masks were also used to scare adversaries in times of conflict. Minor superficial cracks in mask front. Please look closely at the photos. These do not however detract from the value of this type of art as most often this mask as carved while the wood was still fresh. Very minor fissures occur when the wood dries over time. (It is always or pleasure to provide more definitive pics by phone, text or email.) My best estimate would be that this mask is a hand carved replica of a very old subject that hopefully still resides with it’s original family. Created and carved in Africa in the mid 20th century for sales and export for financial family assistance. Original vintage African masks can be worth thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. Finding the area or tribe of origination can be difficult when researching such items but the search is filled with new discoveries and amazing journeys. Start your journey today.
